The city of Busan has announced a temporary suspension of its “Passenger Car Day” system to accommodate residents during the peak summer vacation period.
From July 28 to August 8, vehicles registered for the program will be allowed to operate without penalties, regardless of their designated no-drive days.
The Passenger Car Day system is a voluntary traffic initiative in which participants attach electronic RFID tags to their vehicles and refrain from driving one designated weekday, typically Friday, to help reduce traffic congestion and emissions.
Participants normally receive benefits such as a 10% discount on car taxes (up to 14% for installment payments), a 50% discount at public parking lots, and a 20% discount on residential parking fees.
However, during the suspension period, participants will not be penalized for operating their vehicles on their designated non-driving days.
The city emphasized that while vehicle operation restrictions will be temporarily lifted, other related policies, such as public institution vehicle access rules and standard public parking lot charges, will remain in place.
The city explained that the decision was made in response to high temperatures and the concentration of corporate vacations during this period.
The temporary measure aims to alleviate inconvenience and support public comfort and mobility during one of the year’s busiest travel seasons.
