Busan has been officially selected as the host city for the 48th UNESCO World Heritage Committee in 2026, marking the first time South Korea will host the prestigious global event since joining the World Heritage Convention in 1988. The decision was finalized on July 15 at the 47th committee session held in Paris.
This achievement is a significant milestone for Busan and South Korea, as it positions the country to lead international dialogue on heritage conservation and cultural values. Busan’s selection follows its designation as the domestic candidate city on June 30.
The UNESCO World Heritage Committee is the highest decision-making body responsible for the inscription, preservation, and protection of World Heritage Sites under the 1972 World Heritage Convention.
While Korea has previously served as a committee member, this is the first time the country will host the event, making Busan’s selection particularly notable.
At the Paris session, Busan Vice Mayor Lee Jun-seung delivered official remarks as the incoming host city representative, stating that “Busan has upheld the values of UNESCO through its preservation of culture and humanity, even amid the history of war and refuge.”
A promotional video highlighting Busan’s historical significance, international infrastructure (such as BEXCO and the Nurimaru APEC House), and Korea’s UNESCO-listed heritage sites was also presented.
Mayor Park Hyung-jun called the selection a “historic achievement” and emphasized the city’s commitment to showcasing the values of culture, peace, and sustainability on a global stage.
To ensure the event’s success, Busan will work closely with national and local institutions including the Cultural Heritage Administration, the Busan Tourism Organization, BEXCO, the Busan Cultural Foundation, and the Busan Research Institute.
Special programs unique to Busan are also being developed to offer a memorable experience for all delegates and attendees.
The 2026 World Heritage Committee session will not only spotlight Korea’s contributions to cultural preservation but also reinforce Busan’s emerging status as a leading global city for international conferences and cultural diplomacy.
