The Korean film industry experienced its lowest audience turnout and sales of 2024 in October, but a surge of highly anticipated movies starring top actors is set to hit theaters in the coming months, promising a potential market rebound.
With powerhouse performances from Song Kang-ho, Kim Yun-seok, Hyun Bin, and Song Joong-ki, paired with works from acclaimed directors, the industry is optimistic about drawing audiences back to cinemas.
According to the Korean Film Council, only 3.07 million viewers attended Korean films in October, a 28.6% decline compared to the same month last year.
Revenue also dropped 26.9% year-on-year to 30.8 billion won, the lowest monthly figure this year.
In contrast, foreign films saw a boost, with audience numbers rising 23.3% and sales increasing 21.3% compared to October 2023.
To counter this slump, Korean distributors are banking on high-profile releases.
Upcoming films include One Win starring Song Kang-ho, The Big Family featuring Kim Yun-seok, Harbin led by Hyun Bin, and Bogota: Land of Last Chance with Song Joong-ki. These actors, celebrated for their consistency and star power, are generating significant pre-release buzz.
Notable directors helm these projects, adding further anticipation.
Shin Yeon-sik, known for Dongju and Spider’s Nest, directs 1 Win. Yang Woo-suk of The Attorney and Steel Rain fame is behind Big Family. Woo Min-ho, acclaimed for Inside Men and The Man Standing Next, brings Harbin to life. Lastly, Bogota marks Kim Sung-jae’s return after nine years, following his work on Minority Opinion.
Industry insiders are hopeful that these releases will reinvigorate the Korean box office, driving strong attendance as the year closes.
