The 29th Busan International Film Festival (BIFF) concluded its ten-day run, garnering positive reviews for its increased screenings, high audience turnout, and innovative attempts like the new sea screen.
However, recurring issues such as ticketing errors and projection problems drew criticism, , as the excitement dwindled significantly in the latter half.
This year’s BIFF screened 278 films a total of 633 times, achieving a record-high 84% seat occupancy.
The festival also featured 46 events and 303 Guest Visits (GVs), enhancing interaction between filmmakers and audiences. Notable highlights included the activation of Nampo-dong BIFF Square and the unique sea screen at Minrak Waterside Park.
However, complaints arose as key events were packed into the first five days, leaving the latter half feeling empty. Technical issues persisted, such as a re-screening required for The Height of the Coconut Tree due to equipment failure.
BIFF’s next edition will be held earlier, from September 17 to 26, 2024, due to the Chuseok holiday, with plans to introduce new features for its 30th anniversary.
