The 42nd Busan International Short Film Festival (BISFF) has revealed its competition selections for the 2025 edition.
A record number of entries were received this year, with 5,350 films from 121 countries submitted between October last year and January this year, following the introduction of a paid entry system.
A panel of 25 film experts — 17 from Korea and 8 from abroad — carefully evaluated the submissions. Ultimately, 40 films from 24 countries were chosen for the international competition, while 20 films were selected for the Korean competition.
In the Korean competition, many of the selected works delve into themes such as the harsh realities of capitalism, familial and communal conflicts surrounding housing, and the struggles and aspirations of marginalized youth.
The festival also highlights innovative animated films that creatively blend visual style with intricate soundscapes under the theme “Cinema & Sound.” These films not only mirror societal realities but also present fresh visual languages and experimental approaches.
In the international category, entries with strong political and social messages stood out, with filmmakers using diverse narrative styles to explore personal conflicts within historical and structural contexts. The emphasis on sound was notable, with several works amplifying subtle yet impactful audio elements.
The festival will take place from April 24 to 29 at the Busan Cinema Center and BNK Busan Bank Art Cinema, featuring not only screenings of competition films but also director talks, special invitations, and industry programs.
