2025 French Film Week to Showcase Award-Winning Hidden Gems at Busan Cinema Center

A rare opportunity to experience acclaimed French films not yet released in Korea is coming to Busan.

The 2025 French Film Week, co-hosted by the French Embassy in Korea, will take place from April 10 to 14 at the Busan Cinema Center, featuring 10 specially curated works across various genres including romance, drama, comedy, documentary, and animation.

Now in its fifth year, the festival brings together cinematic works that have been screened at or received honors from prestigious international film festivals. This year’s lineup is set to highlight the diversity and depth of contemporary French cinema.

The opening ceremony will be held at 7 p.m. on April 10 at the Cinematheque Hall.

The festival kicks off with ‘The Successor’, a suspenseful family drama by Xavier Legrand, known for his earlier film Not Yet. The story follows a famous fashion designer who uncovers shocking family secrets after his father’s death.

The film was officially invited to the Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival last year.

    Other featured films include:

‘The Quiet Son’, a powerful drama that explores the collapse of a father-son relationship amid ideological conflict. Lead actor Vincent Lindon won Best Actor at the Venice International Film Festival.

‘Three Friends’, a poignant look at love and friendship from three different perspectives.

‘Souleymane’s Story’, an intimate portrait of a delivery driver living as an undocumented immigrant in Paris.

‘48 Hours of a Parisian Courier’, a Cannes award-winning film that also screened at the Busan International Film Festival.

The lineup also includes compelling non-fiction and animated works:

‘Dahomey’, a documentary examining France’s return of looted artifacts to Benin.

‘Into the Wonderwoods’, a mysterious animated adventure of a young boy left alone in a car.

‘Junkyard Dog’, a raw depiction of youth and insecurity.

‘A Family’, a film that questions social norms and the definition of family.

‘Daaaaaali!’, a unique take on the legendary surrealist artist.

‘Hors du Temps’, a warm and emotional story of two brothers reconnecting in their childhood countryside home.

Cine Talks led by instructors from Alliance Française Busan will follow screenings of ‘The Quiet Son’ on April 12 and ‘Into the Wonderwoods’ on April 13. Free original posters of select films will be available on a first-come, first-served basis.

All screenings are priced at a flat 3,000 won, including the opening night. Online ticket reservations begin at 9 a.m. on April 3 via the Busan Cinema Center website.
