Two British Graffiti Artists Get Four-Month Jail Sentence in Seoul

A local court in Seoul sentenced four-month jail terms to two British men in their 20s for vandalizing subway trains.

The British men, known to be brothers, are members of a Manchester-based graffiti gang called SMT. The two sprayed what looks to be English letters “SMTS” and “SMT,” measuring about 1.1 meters in height and 12 meters in length, on subway trains, back in July 11th and 12th.

The trains were taken out for cleaning duty which took a couple of days.

Judge Kim Kyeong-ran, ruled today, that the men had not only caused financial damage to the train, but also disrupted its services, affecting many ordinary Koreans who rely on the subway for their daily commute and transport.

The vandals had reportedly planned to leave the country on July 13, but were arrested at a guesthouse.

SMT members have been charged with damage worth 300,000 pounds (or about 442.8 million won) on railway companies by drawing graffiti on subway cars over 130 times across the UK from 2011 to 2015.
