After today’s earthquake around the Pohang region, here’s a look at some of the major developments happening so far as of 5 p.m.
UPDATE: 8:45 p.m. – Korea’s CSAT Scheduled for tomorrow has been delayed until Nov. 23
- A 4.6 magnitude aftershock was felt north of Pohang at 4:49 p.m.
- The first earthquake which struck at 2:29 p.m. has been downgraded to a 5.4 magnitude earthquake
- The 5.4 magnitude earthquake is the second largest after the 5.8 magnitude earthquake that occurred last year in Gyeongju.
- Seven people have been reported injured in Pohang so far, with 21 rescues being held as of 3 p.m.
- Photos of concrete debris, broken glass, destroyed vehicles and damage to stores have been shown on local tv coverage and circulating around SNS channels
- A video of a Handong Global University building’s wall crumbling with students evacuating from it has been circulating around Korean news channels
- The depth of the earthquake was 9 kilometers
- Another aftershock, magnitude of 3.6, is also presumed to take place within 7km of Buk-district of Pohang city at 2:32 p.m.
- Kori Nuclear Power Plant is confirmed to be operating without any abnormalities
- Kori Nuclear Power Plant experienced a 2.9 magnitude tremor
- No damage has been reported in Busan so far
- A 40-year-old woman requested a 119 emergency rescue due to psychological shock in Yangjeong
- Over 500 calls were received by Busan Fire Services as of 3 p.m. relating to aftershocks
- Many schools and universities canceled classes after the initial earthquake
