South Korea’s justice ministry said today that it will carry out a special crackdown on foreigners seeking to illegally stay in the country by taking advantage of the upcoming PyeongChang Winter Olympics.
The Ministry of Justice said the decision comes as the number of foreigners visiting the country is likely to increase sharply around the kickoff to the 2018 Winter Games.
Accordingly, the ministry plans to team up with the Korea Coast Guard, the Korean National Police Agency and the Ministry of Employment and Labor to bolster its monitoring system around the event, allocating some 400 workers throughout the country.
Last year, the ministry caught 31,237 foreigners illegally staying in South Korea, along with 6,657 others who hired them.
