The city of Busan has signed a business agreement with the Centre Pompidou to establish the ‘Pompidou Center Busan.’
The signing ceremony took place at 5:30 p.m. yesterday in the International Protocol Room of Busan City Hall, with Centre Pompidou President Laurent Le Bon attending via video conference.
This MOU builds on the foundational agreement signed in January 2022 between Mayor Park and President Le Bon.
The ‘Pompidou Center Busan’ will be a core part of the Igidae Art Park, currently under development, and will be located in the Aulmadang area of the park.
The facility will cover 15,000 square meters and include exhibition halls, creative studios, a performance hall, educational spaces, and more.
An international design competition will be held to ensure the structure harmonizes with the natural beauty of Igidae Art Park, creating a world-class cultural landmark.
This agreement aims to promote collaboration between Busan City and the Centre Pompidou in areas such as developing contemporary art, enhancing cultural accessibility, and fostering public cultural exchange. The MOU will lay the foundation for future projects that support the growth of legitimate business ventures and cultural endeavors.
The ‘Pompidou Center Busan’ will feature exhibitions based on the renowned contemporary art collections of the Centre Pompidou, alongside Busan’s own original exhibits. The center will host one permanent exhibition., one special exhibition per year, and a variety of high-quality educational programs developed by the Centre Pompidou.
The agreement will initially last five years, with the possibility of renewal for continued operation. A dedicated arts committee will oversee the center’s activities, ensuring it reflects the cultural aspirations of Busan’s citizens and art community.
In addition to exhibitions, the ‘Pompidou Center Busan’ will provide a platform for local artists, offering creative studio spaces and support for the regional art ecosystem.
It aims to establish itself as a global hub for contemporary art, fostering international artistic exchanges and creative collaborations.
The project is expected to start construction in 2027, with the official opening planned for 2031.
