The number of accidents reported on the seas or distress calls made have set a new record high last year since records were kept in check in 1993.
According to the Korea Coast Guard, 3,160 vessels have reportedly been in maritime related accidents in 2017, which is 11% more than the 2,800 incidents in 2016.
Incidents related to engine damage were the most frequent among accidents on sea waters, followed by collisions and chemical spill or related incidents.
About 3,100 vessels were reportedly rescued from the distress.
