The city of Busan has announced that the Sujeongsan Tunnel will become toll-free beginning April 19, 2027, following the end of its private management and operation period.
The decision was confirmed after the city council approved the related agreement on June 19, officially ending 25 years of toll operations.
The tunnel, which connects Jwacheon-dong in Dong-gu to Gaya-dong in Busanjin-gu, has been in use since April 2002 as a privately operated toll road.
According to Busan’s planning, future traffic volume does not necessitate lane expansion, allowing for continued two-lane operation in each direction without charge. However, the city is preparing traffic flow adjustments in anticipation of increased congestion once tolls are lifted.
Post-2027, legal safety management of the tunnel will be overseen by the Construction Safety Testing Institute, while daily operations will be handled by the Busan Facilities Corporation.
