일석이조 [ ilseogijo ]

일석이조 is made of Chinese characters meaning ‘one’, ‘stone’, ‘two’, and ‘bird’ by word in order, and it is actually a translated version of the English expression ‘killing two birds with one stone’.

ex)

A) 남을 돕기 위해 기부를 했는데, 내 기분이 좋네. (I donated to help people and I feel good.)  B) 일석이조네. (That’s killing two birds with one stone.)

There is an old saying, 일거양득, which has the same meaning as 일석이조. 일거양득 means ‘one’, ‘lifting’, ‘two’, and ‘gaining’ by word in order.

ex)

A) 마침내 설겆이를 했더니, 이상한 냄새도 없어졌어. (I finally did dishes and the funny smell also disappeared.)  B) 일거양득이네! (Killing two birds with one stone!)
