Gimhae City announced that it will commence construction of the Jinyeong Multipurpose Gymnasium Construction Project, a comprehensive sports hub with a focus on weightlifting.
The city was selected for the ‘Neighborhood Lifestyle Small-Scale Gymnasium Construction Support Project’ by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism in 2023, securing 1.2 billion won in national and provincial funding.
With a total project cost of 2.8 billion won, the gymnasium will cover 870㎡ within the Jinyeong Bonsan Heavy Industry District.
Following a design competition in January, detailed design work began this month, with construction set to begin in October and completion targeted for October 2026.
Once completed, the gymnasium will provide much-needed sports infrastructure for workers in nearby industrial complexes and local residents.
It will house various sports facilities, including a weightlifting gym, foot volleyball courts, and table tennis courts.
Notably, this will be Gimhae’s first gymnasium dedicated to weightlifting, a sport that has evolved from being perceived as an elite competition to a growing lifestyle fitness activity.
Additionally, Gimhae City’s weightlifting team has demonstrated outstanding performance in major domestic and international competitions, including the 2023 Asian Games and the 2024 National Sports Festival.
This has sparked significant interest among citizens and inspired young athletes aspiring to become future weightlifting champions.
The city aims to develop the gymnasium into a multi-functional space that not only promotes community health but also nurtures elite athletes.
