Tongyeong City will host the 39th National City/Province Inter-Site Jangsa Ssireum Competition from Monday, March 24 to Sunday, March 30 at Chungmu Gymnasium.
The event, organized by the local government and the Jangsa Ssireum Association, will bring together approximately 2,000 athletes from 110 teams across elementary, middle, high, college, and women’s divisions.
The competition begins with college and women’s division matches on the first day, followed by individual and team contests across all categories over the seven-day period.
The opening ceremony is scheduled for 1:55 p.m. on Thursday, March 27. Additionally, the high school, elementary, and middle school finals will be broadcast live on MBC Plus for two hours from March 27 to March 29.
Local teams from Inpyeong Elementary School, Chungmu Middle School, and Chungmu High School are participating, with Chungmu High School aiming for the championship.
Tongyeong has a storied history in traditional wrestling, having produced champions in every weight class over the years. The city is particularly optimistic about three emerging local talents—Seol Jun-seok (under 105 kg), Choi I-geon (under 85 kg), and Gu Geon-woo (under 105 kg)—who are seen as the future of the sport.
The venue at Chungmu Gymnasium offers excellent accessibility, and all matches will be free to watch and live-streamed on YouTube.
This event marks Tongyeong’s return as a host after a two-year wait, following previous competitions in Boryeong (2023) and Sancheong and Changnyeong (2024).
