Lotte Giants Release Charlie Barnes, Eyeing Triple-A Pitcher Alec Gamboa as Replacement

The Lotte Giants have officially parted ways with foreign pitcher Charlie Barnes, announcing on May 13 that they have requested his release from the KBO.

The decision follows the diagnosis of a left subscapularis muscle injury earlier this month, which medical staff estimated would require at least eight weeks of recovery.

Barnes, who joined Lotte in 2022, was a steady presence on the mound for two seasons, earning the nickname “Left-wing Lion” for his reliable performance. He recorded double-digit wins and maintained an ERA in the 3.00 range in both years.

However, his form declined this season, with decreased velocity and an ERA of 5.32 over eight starts. His three wins included two against Kiwoom, currently the league’s weakest team.

Lotte, aiming for a strong postseason run, chose not to wait for Barnes’ return and opted for a full replacement.

The team is now in final negotiations with candidates, including Alec Gamboa of the Triple-A Oklahoma City Dodgers.

Gamboa, a 1997-born left-hander, has a fastball in the low 150 km/h range but has struggled with control. He currently holds a 4.19 ERA over eight Triple-A appearances this season.

A Lotte club official confirmed Gamboa is being considered, saying, “He’s one of several candidates. We are finalizing practical details and plan to make an announcement once the deal is confirmed.”
