Eight out of ten office workers in South Korea are planning domestic trips for their summer vacation, with spending expected to increase compared to last year.
According to a survey released on the 30th by the Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry, 81.6% of 800 office workers nationwide said they plan to take a summer vacation this year. Of these, 83.5% prefer domestic travel over international destinations.
The most popular travel duration was 2 nights and 3 days (38.9%), followed by 3 nights and 4 days (22.7%), and 1 night and 2 days (21.3%). Gangwon-do was the top destination (34.9%), followed by Gyeonnam (27.9%), Jeju-do (22.4%), and Jeolla-do (20.0%).
Among those planning to go abroad, Japan (50.9%) and Southeast Asia (45.4%) were the most favored destinations.
The average planned spending per person for vacation was 535,000 won, a 9.4% increase from last year’s 489,000 won.
Spending varied by region, with Seoul office workers planning to spend 776,000 won, while those in South Jeolla Province planned just 393,000 won.
By age, workers in their 30s expected to spend the most (666,000 won), followed by those in their 20s (527,000 won), 40s (494,000 won), and 50s (446,000 won).
When asked about preferred policy support for vacations, 50.8% of respondents cited accommodation discounts.
Other highly ranked measures included expanding the use of local gift certificates and currency (36.5%) and transportation fee discounts (35.8%).
