A new riverside cultural hub opened on June 16 along Uicheon in Seoul’s Gangbuk District, offering scenic views of Bukhansan Mountain and transforming a once-utilitarian space into a year-round destination for relaxation and recreation.
This marks the 11th project under Seoul’s “Waterfront Vitality Zone” initiative aimed at revitalizing city waterways.
Previously used as a road and parking area, the upper embankment of Uicheon has been redesigned with a tiered riverside stand and a building-style terrace inspired by flowing water.
The terrace includes a comic-themed café and panoramic rest spaces overlooking the mountain, while the piloti-style lower level features a water screen, splash-friendly stairs, and ambient lighting for nighttime enjoyment.
Linked with the nearby Baeknyeon Market, the area will also host weekend “car-free streets” with flea markets and food trucks to boost local commerce and walkability.
Following earlier openings this year at Mokdongcheon and Anyangcheon, Seoul plans to launch six more waterfront zones by year’s end, in Yangjaecheon (July), Seongbukcheon (September), Gupabalcheon and Danghyeoncheon (October), and Yeouicheon and Jangjicheon (December).
By the end of 2025, a total of 27 such sites will be completed citywide.
