Seoul Plaza has completed its first major renovation in 21 years, shifting from a large-scale event space to a green, garden-like plaza designed to offer rest, culture, and leisure.
Since its reopening 70 days ago, the newly redesigned space has received a positive response from citizens, with increased satisfaction and usage.
The transformation focused on expanding shaded areas and green rest zones. The addition of pine and zelkova trees, gardens, and a wooden walkway has not only improved walkability but also protected the lawn during frequent events, eliminating the need for lawn replanting since April. Officials expect to reduce maintenance costs by approximately 75% by the end of the year, compared to 2023.
The plaza’s redesigned layout also allows for more efficient event management, as seen during this year’s Seoul Spring Festa, where attendance rose by nearly 30% compared to last year. Comments on social media highlight the increased comfort, improved aesthetics, and inviting atmosphere of the plaza.
The use of hardy Korean-style turf and wooden paths has proven effective in withstanding both heavy use and hot weather, supporting over 50 events without requiring any grass repairs. In terms of environmental impact, the landscaping is estimated to reduce carbon emissions by 331.92 tons annually—equivalent to the yearly output of around 139 vehicles, contributing to Seoul’s goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050.
Looking ahead, Seoul will begin the second phase of the “Seoul Plaza Forest” project in November.
This will include additional tree planters, seating installations, and improved green spaces designed to enhance comfort and encourage longer visits. Completion is scheduled for April 2026.
