Seoul Facilities Corporation has kicked off the “2025 Cheonggyecheon Summer Charm Project” to help citizens enjoy a cooler and more vibrant urban stream experience.
The initiative includes a 50-meter-long designer shade canopy between Mojeon and Gwangtong Bridges, nighttime firefly-themed ambient lighting, and a hands-on outdoor firefly observation space.
The large shade structure, a joint effort with Volkswagen Group Korea’s Cheonggye Atti Foundation, will remain in place through September. Once the project ends, the eco-friendly fabric will be repurposed into upcycled goods like bags and pouches for citizen giveaways via social media campaigns.
A new firefly-themed lighting display has also been installed along a 100-meter stretch of waterside greenery between Mojeon and Gwangtong Bridges.
The solar-powered lights mimic flickering fireflies and operate nightly from 9:00 pm to 5:00 am.
From July 21 to 23, a special firefly observation area will be open near the Cheonggyecheon Ecological School by Majang 2 Bridge.
From 9:00 pm to midnight, visitors can view real fireflies in a space designed with consultation from the Muju Firefly Research Center.
