Following public criticism over structural concerns, the Songdo Coastal Walkway in Seo-gu, will undergo a full safety inspection, five years after renovation work began.
Busan’s Seo-gu District Office announced that it has commissioned a professional firm to conduct a comprehensive inspection of the entire walkway at a cost of 19 million won.
The inspection will assess issues such as corrosion, paint deterioration, and deck sagging, and is expected to take two months. Additional maintenance measures will be determined based on the findings.
The inspection follows backlash over the district’s decision to reopen the popular trail despite reports of instability, including shaking pillars and incomplete safety reinforcement.
Originally constructed in 2006 at a cost of 1.5 billion won, the steel-framed coastal trail was damaged in 2020 by typhoon-induced rockfalls, prompting a 6.5 billion won repair project.
Despite the extended repair timeline, safety concerns resurfaced immediately after reopening, leading to renewed scrutiny of the project’s quality and oversight.
