To mark the 16th anniversary of Busan’s iconic Galmaetgil walking trails, the city is launching a major reorganization project aimed at transforming the footpaths into more accessible, enjoyable, and attractive routes for both citizens and tourists.
First introduced in 2009, Galmatgil has become one of Korea’s most recognized urban walking paths, contributing to public health and city branding.
However, with evolving needs such as an aging population and growing interest in health-focused lifestyles, the city now seeks to modernize and improve the walking experience.
The reorganization includes adjusting the length and difficulty of existing routes, adding new trails, integrating public transportation, and redesigning signage and convenience facilities.
Key goals are to enhance usability for all age groups, highlight Busan’s unique coastal scenery, and unify the guidance system with input from public surveys.
Busan’s plan also calls for better links to regional attractions, such as historical and cultural landmarks and for harmonizing overlapping sections with trails like Namparang-gil and Haeparang-gil to reduce confusion.
